Golf Tip - Tee Height Tuesday, April 24, 2007
The USGA has implemented a rule that limits the golf tee to a maximum of 4 inches. The USGA states that if a player uses a non-conforming tee they will face the most severe penalty in golf - disqualification.
Tee height affects the launch and the spin on the drive. In testing it has been proven that the average player can significantly increase their driving distance if they simply tee it higher. How much distance? We have seen average gains as much as 23.08 yards when we had players switch to a 3-inch tee. The taller tee produces a higher launch angle with lower spin resulting in greater distance. Failure to utilize a taller tee can negate any of the benefits of the latest drivers.
So, why is the USGA penalty so severe? It is because they recognize how much a taller tee can increase distance.
